Digital governance needs to reach young Pakistanis where they spend most of their time, or it does not reach them at all.
Pakistan Digital Authority hosted a delegation from TikTok, at PDA Headquarters this week. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sohail Munir, Chairperson, PDA, and covered the areas where public policy and large digital platforms increasingly meet.
Discussions focused on:
- Strengthening child online safety through digital literacy, parental awareness, and global best practices.
- Advancing AI governance, trust and safety, synthetic content labeling, and election integrity.
- Building collaboration between government, industry, and academia to support policy research, innovation, and capacity building.
- Exploring opportunities in digital education, healthcare awareness, citizen engagement, and startup ecosystem development.
- Examining longer-term technology partnerships across AI infrastructure, smart cities, digital public infrastructure, mapping technologies, and next-generation government services.
Both sides agreed to continue regular engagement on digital policy and emerging technologies. TikTok will share international best practices to support Pakistan's evolving AI and digital policy frameworks, and PDA will continue broad stakeholder consultations to ensure digital governance in Pakistan is inclusive, secure, and future-ready.
Child safety online and the credibility of AI-generated content are not problems any single institution can regulate into existence on its own. Rules written in silos tend to stop at the screen. Rules written without the public tend not to hold. PDA's approach is to keep both conversations running at the same time, because the standards Pakistan sets for its digital environment will have to work in the places where Pakistanis actually spend their attention.
